What exactly is pain management and how is it billed?  Actually pain management comes in many flavors.  It ranges from an anesthesiologist performing pain management services part time to his or her anesthesia practice, all the way to a free standing multidisciplinary practice that may have physical therapy, neurology, surgery, radiology, and psychology providers as well as the pain management providers.

The billing differs along with all the possible variations as each has its’ own peculiarities.  In a hospital setting, the issues range from having hospital employees obtaining complete and correct demographic information to making sure that the services have been pre-certified.  Free-standing centers have the issues of billing for everything provided and billing it all correctly, including lab tests, IV drug dosages, and supplies.  Of course all types of pain management practices deal with making sure the consults get paid and the procedures are coded and billed correctly.
